چکیده

This paper analyzes the welfare effects of monopoly differential pricing in the important but largely neglected case where costs of service differ across consumer groups. Cost-based differential pricing is shown to increase total welfare and consumer welfare relative to uniform pricing for broad classes of demand functions, even though total output can still fall or the output allocation between consumers can worsen. We discuss why cost-based differential pricing tends to be more beneficial for consumers than its demandbased counterpart, third-degree price discrimination, and provide suffi cient conditions for welfare-improving differential pricing when both costs and demands differ across consumer groups.

“ Monopoly Differential Pricing and Welfare ” Friday

This paper analyzes the welfare effects of monopoly differential pricing in the important but largely neglected case where marginal costs of service differ across consumer groups. Compared to uniform pricing, cost-based differential pricing generally raises total welfare. Although total output may fall or even its allocation across consumer groups may worsen, under a minor demand curvature cond...

International Pricing with Costly Consumer Arbitrage

Consumer arbitrage affects international pricing in several ways. If all consumers face the same arbitrage costs, a monopolist's profit increases with arbitrage costs, and world welfare declines with them (if output does not rise). If arbitrage costs differ across consumers, a monopolist may sell in a second country even if there is no local demand—it can use the second country to discriminate ...

Patient mobility and health care quality when regions and patients differ in income.

We study the effects of cross-border patient mobility on health care quality and welfare when income varies across and within regions. We use a Salop model with a high-, middle-, and low-income region. In each region, a policy maker chooses health care quality to maximise the utility of its residents when health care costs are financed by general income taxation. In equilibrium, regions with hi...

Delivered versus mill nonlinear pricing with endogenous market structure

This paper discusses a model where consumers differ according to one unobservable (preference for quality) and one observable characteristic (location), with nonlinear prices arising in equilibrium. The main question addressed is whether firms should be allowed to practice different nonlinear prices at each location (delivered nonlinear pricing) or should be forced to set a unique nonlinear con...

The Economics of Life Insurance Settlement

We investigate the effects of the settlement market of life insurance policies on the monopolistic insurer's profit and social welfare. We assume that consumers differ only in their liquidity needs, and that the insurer cannot discriminate consumers based on their liquidity needs. When the settlement market incurs no costs, we find that the existence of the settlement market enhances social wel...
